When Did You Stop Choosing Yourself?

Have you ever met someone who takes care of everyone....except themselves?
For many mothers, it begins almost invisibly. One child's homework. Another's doctor's appointment. Meals. Laundry. School meetings. Work. Family. Life. One responsibility quietly hands over to the next until the days begin to blur together. And somewhere in the middle of taking care of everyone else... they stop noticing themselves.
In reality, mothers aren't the only ones who experience this. Motherhood simply makes this pattern easier to see. But it isn't unique to mothers. Fathers. Leaders. Caregivers. Elder siblings. Business owners.
Anyone who has quietly made everyone else's needs more important than their own. The exhaustion isn't just physical. It's emotional. Because constantly putting yourself last comes at a cost.
We often celebrate selflessness. But very rarely do we ask what it costs the person being selfless. Somewhere along the way, many mothers begin to believe something that sounds noble:
"My needs can wait."
For a day. A week. Sometimes years. Until eventually... they can no longer remember what brought them joy before everyone else needed them.
Here's what I've learnt.
You cannot keep pouring from a cup you never allow yourself to refill.
Rest isn't a reward for finishing everything. It's what allows you to keep showing up with patience, kindness and presence.
Stopping isn't giving up. Pausing isn't selfish. Choosing yourself occasionally isn't abandoning the people you love. It's making sure there is still something of you left to give.
Whether it's...
Reading a book
Walking in silence
Painting
Gardening
Exercising
Meeting a friend
Or simply sitting quietly with a cup of tea
Protect something that belongs only to you. Not because you've earned it. Because you need it. And because the people who love you deserve the healthiest version of you....not the most exhausted one.
The irony is this. Caring for yourself doesn't take away from your family. It gives more of you back to them. So don't wait until burnout forces you to stop. Choose to pause...
...before life chooses it for you.
Because the people who depend on you need more than everything you do for them.
They need you.
Relection
When was the last time you intentionally did something that nourished only you?
Not because you had finished your responsibilities. Not because someone gave you permission.
Simply because you mattered too. And one final question...
If your daughter grew up treating herself the way you treat yourself today... Would you be proud of what she learnt?
