Whose friend, are you?

Most of us spend our lives trying to be a good friend.

We show up. We listen. We forgive. We encourage. We celebrate. We make time.

And sometimes... we give so much of ourselves that there's very little left.

Years ago, I watched two close friends drift apart. Not because either of them was a bad person. Not because they stopped caring. But because hurt quietly replaced understanding. Neither of them intended to lose the friendship. Yet both walked away carrying disappointment.

It made me wonder something.

When relationships end... why is it so easy to lose ourselves with them?

We replay conversations. Question our worth. Wonder what we could have done differently. Carry guilt. Carry resentment. Carry hope that things will somehow return to the way they were.

But somewhere in the middle of trying to hold on to someone else... we quietly let go of ourselves. Perhaps the most important friendship we'll ever have.. is the one we build with ourselves.

Because when you're your own friend...you don't abandon your values to be accepted.

You don't ignore your needs to avoid disappointing others. You don't keep giving from an empty heart simply because saying "no" feels uncomfortable. Being your own friend doesn't mean loving yourself only when life is going well. It means speaking to yourself with the same kindness...the same patience...and the same compassion...that you so easily offer everyone else.

I've often come back to one simple reminder.

Love genuinely. Care sincerely. Help wholeheartedly.

But never at the cost of abandoning yourself.

Because self-respect is not selfish.

It's the foundation of every healthy relationship. After all...if you cannot be a safe place for yourself...where else will you always belong?

Reflection

Think about the way you've treated yourself over the past week.

The way you've spoken to yourself. The expectations you've placed on yourself. The grace you've allowed yourself.

And one final question...

Are you being as good a friend to yourself as you are to everyone else?
